Tell us why you became a teacher

I became a teacher because I believe words can change a life. I love the moment a student realizes their voice matters, when a text becomes a mirror, a window, or a doorway. Teaching lets me build a space where curiosity is safe, questions are valued, and students learn to think with clarity and courage. I chose this work because it’s worth it.

Tell us about your most memorable teaching experience

I had a student in my class who maybe wasn't the easiest to reach. He was a little rough around the edges and I couldn't tell if he liked or disliked me. His work was okay, not bad, but not great. About halfway through the semester, things began to change. He was more attentive, he participated more, and his work improved. The next year, he approached me in the hall and told me "if it wasn't for you, I wouldn't be walking the stage. I appreciate you." That is what makes me want to keep going.

What would you do with the $25,000?

I would donate a portion of it to help some of the less fortunate students in my school. We have a large economically disadvantaged population who could use a hand with things like senior pictures, prom tickets, cap and gown purchases. Those can get costly and some people just cannot afford them. I would like to help those students out. The rest of the money, I would spend on my wife, who supported me through this crazy journey to becoming a teacher.
