Tell us why you became a teacher

In my schooling experiences, my predominantly Black and brown, low-income peers and I were often overlooked. Our cultures, backgrounds, and voices were rarely acknowledged. I rarely saw myself reflected in teachers or curriculum. These experiences inspired me to be an educator who centers each student’s culture, talents, perspectives, and knowledge so every learner feels seen, valued, and represented.

Tell us about your most memorable teaching experience

My most memorable teaching experience is working at my current middle school and building the relationships I have with my students. The evidence of our relationship building comes from the small gifts or drawings they bring me or the student who I’ve never directly taught making sure to say “Hi favorite teacher I don’t have” every day. I’ve especially enjoyed teaching my girls empowerment advisory where I work with girls of color and we build community through activities and discussion.

What would you do with the $25,000?

As a teacher in LA, I live paycheck to paycheck every month, scrambling to afford bills and life expenses by the end of the month. This money could help me build a foundation for my future through investing and putting money in savings and retirement funds. Even more importantly I would use the money to take care of me and my family. I would do something nice for myself like take a trip or try a new experience. This money would quite literally change my life and the life of those around me.
