Tell us why you became a teacher

I became a teacher to make a difference which is why we all choose this profession. My 5th grade teacher nourished a love for learning in me and all I've ever wanted is to make kids feel the way he made me feel- like I was capable of anything. I became a teacher for the "lightbulb" moments that drive confidence.

Tell us about your most memorable teaching experience

I had a student who told me at the beginning of the year that she "wasn't no good at reading". I found things she was interested in and we worked so hard to close the gaps that she felt she needed. By the end of the year, she was my top student, won my citizenship award, and became such an inspiration. 3 years later, she found me to tell me she had scored in the top of her class and was acing all of her courses. I nearly teared up and felt an overwhelming sense of pride in her. That's my why.

What would you do with the $25,000?

My children have watched their momma struggle for so long on a teacher's salary as a single mom. This money would help me finish my master's degree and allow me to give them their first real vacation in 8 years. My eldest was accepted into a very prestigious school, so this will also help her with her first year of college.
