Learn MoreFor the money! Ha! Just kidding! Honestly, I wanted to pay forward what I received growing up. Some teachers gave me tools that I carry with me to this day - finding deeper meaning and life lessons in pieces of literature or art, learning to speak a new language, and discovering that success was hidden in my mistakes or failures. I knew I could make my life one of service to others, and I wanted to help young people find their own strengths and learn how to face life's challenges.
Tell us about your most memorable teaching experienceEvery year I share with my Spanish students pictures of my experience as an exchange student in Peru. I walk them through my journey, explaining how I learned to let go of my ego and make a fool of myself in the name of learning, and how my life was forever changed by my decision to make the most of that experience rather than letting fear consume me. Students come back to tell me that lesson made a difference in their life, and that reminder of impact never gets old.
What would you do with the $25,000?When I retire, I want to leave a legacy through the Mock Trial program I created years ago. Today, the program thrives at our school. Each year, I watch students grow, learning to speak in public with thought and care, understanding that their words carry great weight. With $25,000, I would create an annual scholarship for a Mock Trial student who shows courage, dedication, and a true desire to learn by stepping beyond their comfort zone to develop new skills and knowledge.
