Tell us why you became a teacher

I became a teacher because I believe education changes lives. Growing up, my dad and my first-grade teacher showed me the power of someone believing in you. Today, in Memphis—my city—I do the same. When my students wear white coats during STEM experiments and our White Coat Ceremony, they don’t just dress up—they see themselves as leaders. They stand taller. They dream bigger. I teach because our children deserve opportunity, access, and someone who believes in their greatness.

Tell us about your most memorable teaching experience

One of my most memorable moments was when Tyrone, as a second grader, told me he wanted to be a veterinarian and asked for a class pet. Years later, he invited me to his graduation—second in his class. At his graduation party, he proudly showed me the lab coat he wore in my classroom. Today he is in veterinary school on scholarship. Watching his dream come full circle reminded me why exposure, belief, and opportunities matter.

What would you do with the $25,000?

If I win $25,000, I will expand hands-on STEM opportunities for students in my Memphis community. The funds will support lab materials, field experiences, mentorships, and career exposure so children can see themselves as scientists, engineers, and innovators. Being named America’s Favorite Teacher would shine a positive light on the city I love- Memphis is worth investing in.
