Chemistry can be a challenging subject. I love helping all students understand they are capable of hard things!

Tell us why you became a teacher

I wanted to inspire underserved communities. As a Chemistry teacher the subject can be hard and dry. I knew that I could connect well with students and make them interested in the subject. I wanted to impact one student of color or female to consider a career in Science. At the very least I wanted them to feel they were capable of a hard subject like Chemistry when they left my class.

Tell us about your most memorable teaching experience

I had a student who had immigrated from Guatemala and needed to pass the state exam in Chemistry to graduate. I worked with her and encouraged her all year. Helping build not only her skills but her confidence. I received her passing score and was able to deliver her the good news. She was so happy and thankful.

What would you do with the $25,000?

I would use it to purchase more supplies from the classroom. I would love to start a collection of novels that feature science to encourage reading and a love of science.
