Tell us why you became a teacher

I became a teacher for two main reasons. Firstly, because I love science! Being able to know how the world around me moves and functions from the littlest cell to the largest systems fascinates me, and I wanted to share that passion, creating people who can see the beauty and want to search for more answers. Secondly, I wanted to be a stable adult in the lives of my students; their lives are so complex, and I wanted the privilege to offer that guidance and stability where possible.

Tell us about your most memorable teaching experience

This experience happened the summer before I started student teaching. I had a student who struggled in multiple ways, having trouble connecting with other people, regulating her emotions, and struggling to concentrate on any particular task. Slowly, we helped her make connections with other students and find activities she enjoyed and was passionate about. And as she got comfortable with the people around her we found her seeking out help when she needed it and self-regulating when she could.

What would you do with the $25,000?

For the majority of the prize, I would put it towards savings for a home. My area is very expensive to live in, but I've fallen in love with the people and community and would like to be able to put down permanent roots here. I would also use this prize to help fund my ability to get a pet. I grew up with dogs and would love to be able to adopt, but I struggle to save enough for a large enough pet emergency fund to give that furry friend the best life I can.
