Tell us why you became a teacher

I became a teacher to help increase the scientific literacy of my community. Understanding Earth Systems is integral to a well informed citizenry, as well as the capacity of an individual to experience belonging and beauty in the natural world.

Tell us about your most memorable teaching experience

I'm fortunate to have so many. My classes participate in Engineering Projects in Community Service (EPICS), and Change The World: Rising Innovators both with ASU, and the students getting to see first hand and experience their direct impact on their community, or realizing the power of their voices, fills me with joy. I have had so many students tell me that they never thought they could do what they did, but all they needed was the opportunity and a couple of pushes to impress themselves.

What would you do with the $25,000?

I would invest in better technology for my classroom. Ive been using my personal 3d printers for 6 years and they are barely functional at this point. We only have one microscope and the platform doesnt stay in place making it virtually impossible to use. Id also invest in better storage options for my classroom. I work in the makerspace/shop class and I make due with the space available but it's pretty cramped. I'd also like to get better seats for my students, they deserve better.
