I became a teacher primarily because of the great teachers that I had. In middle school I started exploring the education career field. I have always enjoyed learning and when I discovered agricultural education as a freshmen in high school I knew that is what I wanted to do. I really enjoy working with students and helping them to explore the many diverse career opportunities within the agriculture, food, and natural resources industry. Learning takes place both in and out of the classroom.

Tell us about your most memorable teaching experience

After eighteen years of teaching it is hard to chooses just one memorable moment. As an agriculture teacher I have an opportunity to spend several years with my students and I get to see them grow and mature into the young leaders that they will be. My most memorable moments are watching those students who come in shy and reserved and watching them discover their voices and develop the career skills that will make them successful in their future careers.

What would you do with the $25,000?

As an agriculture teacher and FFA advisor, I would invest the $25,000 directly into hands-on learning experiences for my students. I would upgrade lab equipment, expand our greenhouse and mechanics shop resources, and provide industry certifications to better prepare students for careers in agriculture. I would also fund leadership development and travel opportunities so more students can compete and grow through FFA events.
