Mary Kleiber

A child’s mind is a magnificent thing. I love teaching those “aha” moments. I’ve had the pleasure of teaching Science 24 years to 5th grade.

Tell us why you became a teacher

I initially became a teacher because I felt that it was the perfect job in which to raise a family. It would allow me to be with my children more, including being their science teacher. Coming from a large district growing up I wished for my children to be in a small district. When the opportunity arose, I took it and have been here ever since. I remained teaching because of the relationships I developed with the kids, parents, community and the family-like working atmosphere. I love teaching!

Tell us about your most memorable teaching experience

I'd have to say my most memorable experience was when my GT students wanted to keep the chicks we hatched in the classroom as their year-long project. Once the chicks hatched, the GT students created a persuasive presentation to gain approval from the principal. It has been game on ever since. They have shared responsibility of taking care of them. There were 2 that died and they held a funeral. They got donations of a coop, feed, and supplies. Their goal was to incubate and sell eggs. Fun!

What would you do with the $25,000?

If I was to receive the $25,000 I would first put it into a money market account. As it begins to accrue interest, I would like to donate the interest to help my campus science lab to restock inventory. We are a Title 1 school and could really use the extra funds. Doing this would help to offset the taxes I would have to pay for winning of the $25,000 and help the school as well. Being that I am within 5 years of retirement the extra money would help pay for expenses once that time arrives.
