I love teaching because of the excitement my students have when they have learned something new!

I had a teacher in second grade, Mrs. Bratcher. I was new to the private school and knew no one. For my birthday month (2 months in to the school year), I received the monthly Terrific Kid award that was given to one student per grade. She even included my parents in the celebration. She told me she believed in me and loved me for who I was and who I could be. I use those same words with my students 30 years later.
Tell us about your most memorable teaching experienceMy first class had a student who would be later diagnosed with Asperger’s. I would shield my class from objects thrown during many of his anger moments. I tried different methods but none seems to work. I prayed one evening and music therapy was the answer. Instead of vocal transition, I used music transition- different music to each part of our day. That student fell in love with music and to this day, still says I’m his favorite teacher. He’s a senior in high school and is thriving!
What would you do with the $25,000?I would love to allow family and friends to have access to educational funding for their children. The ability to not worry about the cost of school supplies for projects or for every day use would be a delight for me to give back. I would love to start a reading program.
