I became a teacher because I grew up in poverty and was raised to believe that education was the only way to change my future. School became my pathway to hope. I experienced the kindness and dedication of teachers who believed in me, and that inspired me to become one of them. If education helped me rise above my circumstances, I believe it can do the same for others. I teach to make a difference in people's lives and help uplift communities.

Tell us about your most memorable teaching experience

When I first moved from the Philippines to Los Angeles, I entered a packed classroom where students vandalized supplies and tried to intimidate me. I felt overwhelmed, but instead of seeing problem students, I saw young people who most needed love, compassion, and structure. I built trust, stayed consistent, and refused to give up. A few months later, those same students became my protectors and leaders. That experience showed me that compassion and belief can turn chaos into family.

What would you do with the $25,000?

Three things I would do with $25,000 are: first, save a portion for my two children’s college tuition. Second, set aside some funds for a meaningful family trip to Yellowstone or to see the Northern Lights. Third, support my library project that provides educational resources for indigenous communities in the Philippines.
