Tell us why you became a teacher

I chose teaching because I wanted purpose, not just a job. I know the impact that a supportive teacher can have on a student's life path. I chose to be that steady voice for students who need encouragement, structure, and someone who simply believes in them.

Tell us about your most memorable teaching experience

One of my most cherished memories was when I taught 8th graders a simpler way to subtract numbers in scientific notation. One eager student really lit up when she realized there's more than one way to solve math problems! Seeing that "aha" moment is why I teach.

What would you do with the $25,000?

I would use that prize to strengthen the classroom. Examples would include chromebooks, posters, and graphing calculators. I would take my students on a field trip they'll never forget to the US Space and Rocket Center (Huntsville AL). Thirdly, I'd use part of the prize to put a down payment on a house for my mother.
