Teaching music allows me to pass along something that has shaped who I am. I love watching students discover that they are capable of making something beautiful and meaningful. Many students come into a music classroom unsure of themselves or unsure of their place. Some have never held an instrument before, and others doubt their own abilities. Being able to guide them through that uncertainty and watch their confidence grow is one of the most rewarding parts of my job.

One of my most memorable teaching moments was starting a beginner band at the high school level. Many students had never played an instrument and were unsure of themselves. Over time, I watched their confidence and love for music grow. Three of those beginners eventually made the top wind ensemble and joined drumline, and two later became drum majors. Seeing students who once doubted themselves grow into passionate musicians and leaders was incredibly rewarding.

If I received $25,000, I would first put a portion toward my son’s college education to help support his future and reduce financial stress. I would also use some of the money to pay down existing debts to create greater financial stability for our family so that paying for our daughter’s college would be less of a burden. Finally, it seems so small, but I would replace our furnace and air conditioner. These have needed replacing for year, but something else is always needed or gets in the way.
