Connect Tell us why you became a teacher

I became a teacher because I fell short of playing on the NBA. I did reach the professional ranks of basketball in Europe for many years but I had a son who is now the same age as I was when I told my moms what my plans were going to be; ironic right? For me, to fill that void for my students even if it is for a few hours of their day as a positive male figure means so much to me. Teaching took precedence over everything these days and I look forward to it every day.

Tell us about your most memorable teaching experience

“I come to school just to go to gym, coach.” This is what a student told me one time in 2018. I never forgot that. At first I used to think I was not important until one of my favorite young athletes looked me in the eye and told me that. I made sure I was on time and prepared for not only that 1 scholar but for any other youth person who felt that way but were probably shy to express it. My purpose torch was lit. The desire to impact was evident that I did matter and so do my students.

What would you do with the $25,000?

As the creative director of my own basketball academy I would use the funds to give scholarships to children who cannot afford extracurricular activities such as basketball. I would also pay for the gym rentals for the group sessions I facilitate on Friday and Saturday nights.
