Tell us why you became a teacher

I did not take the standard approach to teaching. After college graduation, I accepted a position in our local government office, working in building and planning. My life did not feel fulfilled, and I had a calling to somehow help others in my community. As my own children grew, it became clear to me that educating young learners was my true passion. I cherish my teaching certificate that I earned at the time of my mother's death, while my husband was severely ill and not employed full time.

Tell us about your most memorable teaching experience

My most memorable teaching experience was helping Morgan, a student in Kindergarten Readiness who suffers from Beta-Propeller Protein-Associated Neuro-degeneration, (BPAN). This rare disease only impacts 500 people in the world and causes global delays, seizures, and in early adolescence, a regression. I was able to help sweet Morgan learn in the classroom and advance into kindergarten, as well. It was a blessing to be with Morgan on her unique journey, and see her continued progress each day.

What would you do with the $25,000?

Winning the $25,000.00 would be life-changing for me. I would first donate a portion to BPAN research and also be able to begin my master’s program in educational leadership. Additionally, I would help my youngest son with paying for college tuition in the fall. I am proud of his kind heart and determination, as he will be graduating with honors from high school in May.
