Lisa Perry Clearwater

Teaching, after 40 years, is still my ministry. I consider my special needs students some of the greatest people I've ever met.

Tell us why you became a teacher

I don't remember ever not wanting to be a teacher. I remember back in first grade, Miss Annette Poole, choose me to be the teacher in a school play. That was it. I was hooked.

Tell us about your most memorable teaching experience

My classroom in my first year as an elementary special ed classroom was in a portable. The night before school started, it was broken into and totally destroyed and vandalized. By 9 am that day, with a line of teachers in Horry County, SC, my classroom was reborn. They brought materials, desks, and a lot of love.

What would you do with the $25,000?

My son is in his junior year studying to be a teacher. I would put most of it toward his education and tuition costs so that he could start his career without worrying about teacher loans. If there was any left, I would put an accessible swing on our playground.
