Lisa Martin

When the world can be unkind and unpredictable, I can bring their peace. I love teaching because I truly make a difference in so many ways.

Tell us why you became a teacher

As a child, I experienced a difficult home life. During that time, school became my safe place. My teachers were more than educators — they were steady, caring adults who provided comfort, consistency, and support when I needed it most. They noticed when I was hungry. They met not only my academic needs but also my emotional and basic needs. Their classrooms were spaces where I felt secure and valued. Those experiences shaped who I am and why I chose this profession.

Tell us about your most memorable teaching experience

One of my most memorable teaching experiences happened while working with a group of middle school girls. At the beginning of the year, they struggled to get along. There was cattiness, hurt feelings, and the kind of tension that can quickly take over a classroom. Instead of focusing only on correcting behaviors, I chose to focus on culture. I introduced a simple mantra in our classroom: “Only beauty.” We talked honestly about how harsh and unkind the world can be, and how much power we have.

What would you do with the $25,000?

I would invest money into being more self sustained. I would build a greenhouse and grow more plants for food and teas.
