Working with students from all walks of life, I too go to school to learn each day alongside them. To be a part of a vibrant human-centered space where the teaching and learning thrives beyond the textbook would be a remarkable experience if for only once. As a teacher, I get to experience this each day; I do so with unbridled enthusiasm. Balancing structure and unpredictability is invigorating. I hold my students accountable, and responsible with compassion, understanding, and by leading.

End of 8th grade class trip to Chicago, principal says, "Baugh, I'm giving you a tough group of young men to chaperone for three-days. If there's anyone that can handle it, it's you." As it turned out they were four 8th grade boys who like most their age loved basketball, Nike, and cars. With a 5:45 am arrival to load the busses, the trip started off calm. But once in Chicago, I pulled out four neon pink t-shirts with glitter letters that read, "Baugh-lers". Together we had the best time.

What would you do with the $25,000?

Pay for every 8th graders end-of-year boat trip ticket on the Detroit Princess ($50 X 200=$10,000). With the remaining $15,000, I would purchase washers and dryers for my school along with clothes for students. At the most diverse, low-income, and Title I school in our district, our students (many migrants and refugees) do not have clean sized-to-fit clothing. I would also love to start a student-led school garden as well.
