Tell us why you became a teacher

Mrs. Pettus, Mrs. House, and Mrs Slatton were all great teachers. Mrs. Pettus was my second grade teacher. Mrs. House was my fifth grade teacher and Mrs. Slaton was my chemistry, biology, and physics teacher in high school. They showed me it was OK to be curious, intelligent, and a girl. I want students to remember the joy they had learning in a class I facilitated and use that knowledge to open doors to their future.

Tell us about your most memorable teaching experience

My favorite Christmas gift was a candy cane and a dollar from a student I have devoted extra time to my 3rd years of teaching. He had them wrapped inside of a handwritten note that said, “Thank you for teaching me and helping me because I didn’t like school and I hated math before I came to your class. You are a great teacher and I love you.”

What would you do with the $25,000?

I would start a scholarship in my mother‘s name, take a dream vacation, and because I am frugal, I will put the rest in savings.
