Tell us why you became a teacher

I became a teacher because, growing up, I rarely saw African American men in education. I did not realize it was a possible path until I had my first Black teacher. Seeing him changed how I viewed my future. My life experiences working with students from many backgrounds inspired me to become a teacher and librarian so I could serve my community, expand young minds, and show students that it is possible to become anything they want.

Tell us about your most memorable teaching experience

During my first year teaching in an American school, I had a sixth grade student who was extremely shy and would not speak to anyone. I invited the student to sit near me during instruction to build trust. Eventually they began answering questions through a small Pikachu toy they brought to class. Over time the student gained confidence, began talking with others, and grew into one of the most social students in class. I was gifted the plush which I have to this day!

What would you do with the $25,000?

If I won the $25,000, I would create a traveling learning program for my students. We would take the train from Tacoma, Washington to a city like San Francisco while studying geography, culture, and history along the journey. Students would visit museums and historic sites connected to the Northwest Coast and Pacific region. I believe learning should extend beyond the classroom, and travel helps students see the world as their library.
