Tell us why you became a teacher

I started out as a PhD student in research physics, but I fell in love with teaching while working as a TA in grad school. I have a knack for breaking down complex ideas and connecting with students who don’t yet believe they’re capable of succeeding in math or science. Watching them realize their own potential is what inspires me most. And I love helping students see the beauty and wonder of the universe through physics.

Tell us about your most memorable teaching experience

Taking five teenagers who’d never left home to Washington, DC for the National Science Bowl was unforgettable. One set his backpack—with a laptop inside—on the ground and walked away. “I can still see it,” he said. “So can everyone else.” They competed fearlessly—one later went to MIT, another to Harvard. Moments like that remind me why I teach. I love those kids, and they’ll always hold a special place in my heart.

What would you do with the $25,000?

I’m a single mom of a 16-year-old son and a daughter who beat 8 years of addiction when she had her baby. My granddaughter was born this Valentine’s Day. I’d replace my beat-up 2009 Civic and use the rest to help my son with college and give my daughter and granddaughter the support they need
