Tell us why you became a teacher

I became a teacher because I wanted to make a difference. I started as a general education teacher then I pivoted to special education. I love helping students reach their individual goals and grow. It's amazing to watch students who were told never be successful. I am a teacher because I believe students are capable of learning and growing at their own pace. No student should be told no, you will never do that. I want to open doors for all learners.

Tell us about your most memorable teaching experience

My most memorable teaching experience was when a student with an intellectual disability gave a presentation to her classmates. This student researched a Greek goddess, dressed as the goddess and explain who she was and the story behind her goddess. She made eye contact and spoke so everyone could hear her. Her entire class clapped at the end of the presentation. My student had the biggest smile on her face, she belonged. She worked hard and was successful- her peers celebrated her success!

What would you do with the $25,000?

I would use the money to provide my own children with new experiences. As Catholic School teacher, I make less than teachers in the public schools.I love being able to build an inclusive program so all children have the opportunity to learn about their faith. Building an inclusive has made the world difference at my school, for just for our students with learning differences but for the whole community as a whole. The $25,000 would supplement my income and enable me to continue teaching.
