Learn MoreI became a teacher because creativity gave me a voice — and I wanted to help children find theirs. Art has always been more than paint and paper to me. It’s confidence. It’s problem-solving. It’s healing. It’s a way to communicate when words don’t quite work. I realized early on that not every child has someone who sees their potential in that way, and I wanted to be that person. With a background in special education and bilingual education, I’ve seen how powerful creative spaces can be.
Tell us about your most memorable teaching experienceOne of my most memorable moments was watching a student who rarely spoke proudly present his artwork to the class. He struggled academically and socially, but in art he found confidence. The way he stood taller, explained his choices, and accepted applause reminded me that creativity builds more than skill—it builds identity.
What would you do with the $25,000?I would use the $25,000 to expand access to high-quality art experiences for my students—bringing in visiting artists, funding museum field trips, purchasing durable supplies, and creating a community showcase space that celebrates student voice. I would also invest in building sustainable art programming that continues impacting students long after the funds are spent.
