Tell us why you became a teacher

As a shy third grader with a passion for art, my art teacher helped boost my self-esteem and recognized my talent. I still keep in touch with her to this day. Later, my high school art teacher inspired me to follow my dreams and go to college for art education. I was even fortunate enough to teach alongside him for years before he retired. I hope my own students will one day say the same about me that I encouraged them, believed in them, and pushed them out of their comfort zones.

Tell us about your most memorable teaching experience

As a high school art teacher, I love finding ways for my students to connect art with our community. One of our most meaningful experiences was working with Operation Smile through a program called A Dolphin’s Promise. Two dolphin sculptures were purchased, with proceeds supporting Operation Smile and the incredible work they do. My art students and I painted both dolphins. One is displayed at our high school and represents our local community and the area we all call home.

What would you do with the $25,000?

If I won America’s Top Teacher and received the $25,000 award, I would invest it in both my students and my own growth as an educator and artist. I believe the more experiences I have as an artist, the more I can bring back to inspire my students. Additionally, I would organize and participate in community based art projects that connect students, families, and local organizations through creativity and service. My goal would be to continue building connections between art and community.
