Kyra Babcock

Having the ability to help students channel emotions through making music is an absolute joy. Music expresses so much when words cannot.

Tell us why you became a teacher

I was studying my freshman year to be a marine biologist, and it wasn't clicking; I wasn't enjoying it one bit. At the time of that realization, my middle school band director contacted me asking to come work with his horn players. The happiness and fulfillment I felt walking into my former middle school, and the way the students responded to me was overwhelming. I knew teaching was my calling.

Tell us about your most memorable teaching experience

Gosh, only one?!?!? I was in my seventh year as a music teacher, and found myself in a sad situation: my school district had to cut my teaching position to save money (like most of the arts in public schools). At the end of my final concert, all 100+ of my students surrounded me with hugs and sweet words. The audience gave me a standing ovation with many minutes of applause. It was a bittersweet moment.

What would you do with the $25,000?

Donate 100% to my school instrumental music program. I will not take any for myself or my family. I'm completely doing this for my students and our district. Fine arts programs struggle financially, and the $25,000 would help MANY present and future students.
