Tell us why you became a teacher

Teaching is about giving back. I want to give back to my community by fostering a supportive, loving community for all learners.

Tell us about your most memorable teaching experience

I was teaching about Jim Crow laws to students in 5th grade. I used imagery in writing to have them create a picture in their mind about what it would be like to not be allowed to do certain things just because they were kids. We then talked about how in history America did this to African Americans. They were immediately empathetic and outraged. We had a productive conversation about why Jim Crow was wrong.

What would you do with the $25,000?

1. Start a free after school program for parents to send their student to keep them safe while they are finishing work. 2. Advocate for students with low income that need additional services and resources. 3. Stuff a school- provide school supplies needed for an effective school year. 4. Pay for student’s field trip fees 5. Sponsor a teacher for the year- need supplies? Want to do a hands on lesson, but no resources? 6. Fund arts education
