Kylie Metz

I love teaching because I get to witness tiny moments that quietly change how a child sees themselves, often when they least expect it.

Tell us why you became a teacher

Growing up, I didn’t have one specific teacher who deeply impacted me. In college, while undecided on a major, I heard others talk about teachers who changed their lives. That’s when I realized the power teachers have. I wanted to be that teacher, the one who is there for every student, who believes in them, and who makes a lasting difference.

Tell us about your most memorable teaching experience

One of my most memorable moments was during our March Madness book bracket. My class became obsessed — debating books, defending characters, and begging to read “just one more.” One of my quietest students stood up to passionately argue why their book should advance. The class listened. They voted. That student beamed. It wasn’t just about books — it was confidence, voice, and community all coming together in one moment.

What would you do with the $25,000?

If I won the $25,000, I would invest it directly back into my classroom and my students. I would build a diverse classroom library with high-interest books, flexible seating options, hands-on math and literacy materials, and sensory tools to support all learners. I would also create meaningful experiences—author visits, field trips, and family literacy nights. My goal would be to make my classroom a place where every child feels seen, supported, and excited to learn.
