Tell us why you became a teacher

I became a teacher due to my own personal experiences in school. I don’t remember teachers who liked me, cared about me or feelings, or wanted me to succeed. I work everyday to show, tell, and provide examples where each of my students feel valued. I believe that emotion is the catalyst to learning and when children feel safe and trusted, they retain the academics. They want to own their learning. They want to demonstrate growth. They want to succeed. We set goals and we achieve them!

Tell us about your most memorable teaching experience

My most memorable teaching experience was the year that “the naughtiest” student who nobody wanted was placed in my classroom. A young man who had no interest, no motivation, and no desire to learn. With perseverance, and simple kindness and respect he became an honor roll student, with self respect and self love. I learned the importance of authentic student engagement and he taught me more than I taught him. The look in his eyes when he found the connection with success was priceless.

What would you do with the $25,000?

With 25,000 dollars I would pay off my debt, and take my family on vacation. I would also save for security, and have a peace of mind. I would sleep better and general just feel better. I would pay it forward to people who have helped me when times were tough. I would be so grateful!
