Tell us why you became a teacher

Fear does not look like me. After 9/11, as a Muslim-Pakistani-American, I was thrust into defending an identity shaped by others’ fear. I saw how dangerous a single story could be, and how powerful it is when young people are given space to question, process, and define themselves. Grief and reflection clarified my purpose. This is why I became a teacher: to help students find their voice, challenge false narratives, and build a more just understanding of one another.

Tell us about your most memorable teaching experience

After my Fulbright in Uruguay, I connected my fifth graders with students there, replacing stereotypes with curiosity. They built SDG websites and engaged in meaningful global dialogue, examining multiple perspectives. I developed an inclusive curriculum and led PD rooted in these lessons, presenting at NJEA and soon NEA. The impact: students who see themselves as global citizens who are confident, empathetic, and ready to lead.

What would you do with the $25,000?

With $25,000, I would fund the research and development of an inclusive ELA curriculum centered on religious literacy, providing stipends for educators and scholars, and securing necessary resources. I would set aside a portion toward a down payment on a home as a New Jersey educator. Finally, I would support travel opportunities for students and families who cannot afford them, because travel is education.
