Tell us why you became a teacher

I have always wanted to be a teacher even when I was a young child. I used to play school and I knew that was my life goal. I want to help students be successful and excited about learning and I strive to do this every day. I’ve been an educator for 35 years and taught in person and virtually since 2014 and just love it! It brightens my day when a student says, “I get it now!” or “ Is it time to go already?”. This is why I became a teacher and teaching is so rewarding to me.

Tell us about your most memorable teaching experience

I can remember working with a student who wa struggling with math, and submitted an assignment with a mean comment. Instead of being harsh or yelling, we talked about the comment and why it was not appropriate and his total attitude and learning changed. He began working hard and soon he was ahead in his coursework making excellent grades. He would tell the other students, “I am not trying to brag but I am making all A’s”. It was the first time he had experienced success and he was so excited!

What would you do with the $25,000?

I would invest in books for my students and let them choose their very own book. I want them to know how important reading is and encourage them to develop a love for reading. I would also see about investing in technology or clothing for them to meet their needs. AdditionallyI would see what needs my school has and I would put in savings. I know paying bills and putting the money into savings is boring, but to me that security is so valuable and priceless.
