Tell us why you became a teacher

I became a teacher because I had mentors who believed in me when I didn’t believe in myself. They showed me that education transformers lives. I wanted to be that person for others— to create a safe space where students feel valued, challenged, and capable. After 22 years, I’m still driven by the privilege of shaping your minds and knowing that the investment I make in my students today influences who they become tomorrow. Teaching chose me as much as I chose it.

Tell us about your most memorable teaching experience

After 22 years, my most memorable moment came in my first year at a new school when peers nominated me for teacher of the year. My previous principal said I wasn’t cut out for teaching— a comment that stung. That nomination proved her wrong and validated everything I have fought for. It showed my students that perseverance and self belief matter, and reminded me why I never gave up on this profession.

What would you do with the $25,000?

I’d split this gift between my students and myself. Half would go directly to my classroom— funding field trips, technology, and resources for underserved students who can’t afford these opportunities. The other half? I’d invest in my own wellness and growth— professional development, time to recharge, and resources that help me show up as my best self for my students. You can’t pour from an empty cup, and investing in teacher wellness, ultimately benefits everyone.
