Tell us why you became a teacher

Growing up , I was always the shy “forgotten about kid” because I was quiet, listened, and did my work. I want to make sure no one is forgotten about or looked over. I want to grow critical thinkers for tomorrow’s society.

Tell us about your most memorable teaching experience

Teaching in South Korea was so rewarding. I once had a Kindergarten class that made their own play. They chose what character they wanted to be, and I helped them to “write themselves into the story.” We had a pirate, Cinderella, and Superman to name a few. They also wrote their own actor’s bio for the playbill. Some of them were lighting tech and theater mangers as well.

What would you do with the $25,000?

Honestly, I’d put it toward my brewery that I’m opening with my husband. Once I find something I love, I always want to “take it to the next step.” It’s part of my personal learning and growing process. I discovered that I love making beer. And so does my husband. So, we’re opening a Hawaiian-themed brewery in Syracuse, Indiana. I grew up in Hawaii, and want to spread the local Hawaiian flavors and vibe. But I think I will always have a side job of teaching children to read. I just love it!
