Tell us why you became a teacher

My mom was a teacher, and for as long as I can remember I wanted to follow that same path. I always knew teaching was what I would do. I love working with kids and helping them learn, grow, and gain confidence. Seeing their progress and knowing I can make a positive difference in their lives is what makes teaching so meaningful to me.

Tell us about your most memorable teaching experience

One memorable experience was with a student who struggled academically and behaviorally and often challenged me. Years later, he sent me a handwritten note thanking me. He said that although he didn’t like the discipline at the time, he later appreciated it and the support I gave him. He encouraged me to keep teaching. Moments like that—and when former students return to visit—remind me how meaningful these relationships are.

What would you do with the $25,000?

If I won, I would donate to the college I attended, Martin Luther College in New Ulm, MN, to support the training of future church workers. I would also give a gift to my church and the school where I teach. I would love to travel somewhere in the country by train and share that experience with my students. I would also contribute a portion to my retirement fund.
