Being a teacher was never the plan, but that all changed when I worked as an elementary special education aide. I witnessed struggle turn into confidence and saw students experience powerful “lightbulb” moments that ignited my passion for teaching. That spark grew into this bright, luminous path of teaching. Teaching might not have been the original plan, but I am grateful for this teaching plan every day.

The most memorable teaching experience was walking beside my student, MJ, during her battle with leukemia. I fought for her to have a safe, clean place to learn and became her homebound teacher so she could keep chasing her dreams. Even in the hardest moments, she never lost her determination. Watching her succeed in school and athletics during her battle was inspiring. Today, she's a nurse at the very hospital that once fought to save her life. She will forever be my inspiration, my hero.

If I received the $25,000, I would create a scholarship in honor of my former student, Marlee Jo. Watching her battle leukemia with courage, resilience, and determination changed me as a teacher and as a person. Her strength showed everyone around her what it truly means to overcome obstacles beyond one's control. This scholarship would support students facing life’s toughest challenges while still fighting for their education and their future, just like MJ did.
