I became an educator because I was once a child who struggled academically in elementary school. Patient, caring teachers worked with me individually and helped me believe in myself, changing the trajectory of my life. Inspired by my mother, a special education interventionist, and my stepmother, a kindergarten reading teacher, I committed to helping children learn to read and succeed. I now aspire to lead and create supportive school communities where every child feels empowered.

One of my most memorable teaching moments began when my fourth graders asked to learn chess, a game I didn’t know. Instead of saying no, I learned alongside them and created our school’s first chess team. Through practice and perseverance, they built confidence and went on to win a National Championship. More than the title, I watched underestimated students see themselves as capable leaders.

If I were blessed to win the $25,000, I would first invest in my daughter’s future. She’s a freshman in college, and helping ease her financial burden would mean everything to me. I would also use a portion to stabilize my own household as I navigate a divorce. This support would provide peace of mind and allow me to continue showing up fully for my family and my students.
