Tell us why you became a teacher

I became a teacher because I wanted to inspire the next generations of artists, dreamers, and creators. There is a quote I love by Maya Angelou that says You can't use up creativity. The more you use, the more you have”. This quote is a direct correlation to my beliefs about teaching. Creativity is contagious and it is the spark that drives students in all areas of learning. Creativity does not require any prerequisite. I aim to meet my students where they are and let them see that they can grow

Tell us about your most memorable teaching experience

It is hard to pick just one! We just did our first whole school musical and many of my cast and crew have never done a musical or production. They have worked so hard to learn their parts, create, design, and work together. I think seeing their smiles and confidence after our first school performance was memorable. They all cheered for each other and were so proud of their accomplishment. They grew so much during the process. I was very proud of them as well.

What would you do with the $25,000?

I would purchase materials for the students and create experiences that take their learning to the next level. I teach theatre and our spaces are not necessarily created with a theatre program in mind. So being able to enhance the learning space for my students would be phenomenal. I would love more lighting and a spotlight and materials that teach the science and design behind theatrical productions. It would also be great to be able to bring in theatre artists to work with my students.
