Tell us why you became a teacher

I did not believe I could be a teacher once i finished high school. After all, how could I measure up to my heroes? Putting on the cape was scary because I believed I would be doing the impossible. Friends and family convinced me that because I was so passionate about it that I was scared of messing up made me the perfect candidate. Today I wear my cape proud, continuing to be the hero I try to be everyday.

Tell us about your most memorable teaching experience

As a high school teacher you run into a lot more serious issues. I am so passionate about teacher Earth Science. I entertain, joke, and laugh, but I also relate, talk, and listen to my kids. I am their safe place. One student had not shown up for a few weeks and I got worried. When she returned, she trusted me enough to tell me everything. I sat and listened to her story. When she finished, I gave her a long hug and felt her slowly relax. Shes been coming to me ever since. Im "school mom" now.

What would you do with the $25,000?

$25,000 would go toward food and school supply donations for my school. I run the National Math and Science Honor Society where we run donation drives all year and I work in a lower income school. I see students who are hungry, tired, cold, and embarrased when they dont have school supplies. I know the perfect person at my school who would give these supplies to the students who need it the most and not just my own kids. Anything left will help me in the summer (I dont get paid July-August).
