I love that I learn from the kids. Every day they teach me something. I love building lasting relationships with the toughest students.

Tell us why you became a teacher

I used to be in nursing school, but became a teacher because, I really enjoyed tutoring my peers in college. The lightbulb moments, seeing confidence blossom, and watching goals become realities made my heart soar. Through becoming an RA and a camp counselor I saw I could also make a difference in the lives of younger people and help them build life skills as they build confidence. I knew I wanted to be "that teacher" students remembered who believed in them and helped them reach their goals.

Tell us about your most memorable teaching experience

I don't think I could pick just one. In my opinion the most memorable thing about teaching is watching the progress of the students you teach. I have had students come into my room hating Science, and they leave telling me they had so much fun in my class and now love Science. I think seeing kids run to me when they need a safe space, open up in class and begin to participate, and make progress on their goals are all memorable experiences. I get to re-live those moments of success every year.

What would you do with the $25,000?

I would buy our school new AC units or microscopes with this money! Our building has not been renovated since the 60's and there is no air conditioning. The old window units (some over 10 years old) can not keep up with the heat. The air quality is also bad and can aggravate lungs of students and staff. New AC units would be a blessing! Our middle school is also currently borrowing microscopes from the HS if we need them, so it would be great to have a class set for the middle school teachers.
