Growing up with a learning disability inspired me to teach so I can be the support I didn’t have and give back to my community.

I became a teacher because growing up with ADHD made school incredibly challenging. Many of my teachers didn’t understand me, and some even said I was not capable of doing greater things. Hearing that from the people who were meant to guide me was painful and discouraging. I never want a child to feel that way. I chose teaching so I can support students who learn differently, believing in them when others don’t, and helping the see their potential.
Tell us about your most memorable teaching experienceThis year, I worked with a student facing significant disabilities and an unimaginable home life. Each day with them was a challenge as progress was slow and often hard won. Recently they came to visit me giving me a hug and thanking me. While they admitted they disliked history, they said my class is the only one they look forward to because of me. I haven’t been teaching long but I know this moment will stay with me throughout my career.
What would you do with the $25,000?The first thing I’d comically buy is pencils, my students go through them like candy! After stocking up I would purchase other classroom essentials to better support learning and keep our space well equipped. Any remaining funds would go toward paying off my student loans, helping ease financial stress so I can focus even more on being present for my students.
