Tell us why you became a teacher

I went through some major life changes when I was around eleven. There were many days that I didn't have snack or lunch money or even an adult at home to help me with my homework. Some of my teachers picked up on this and would do little things to let me know that I had someone around who cared, such as giving me .50 when I was the only one without snack money. These little acts of kindness and knowing that I was being seen, meant more than they knew. I wanted to be that person for kids.

Tell us about your most memorable teaching experience

I've been teaching for twenty years, and I have so many memorable teaching experiences that make it hard to narrow it down to just one. Each year, my students make so many lasting impressions on my heart and soul, so many that I could write a book! From silly moments in class, hugs when they see me at the grocery store, or emails from them when they are in high school thanking me for being a great elementary school teacher, all make memorable teaching experiences!

What would you do with the $25,000?

My family has unfortunately experienced many tragedies over the last 15 years, including losing parents, grandparents, aunts and uncles. Of those, I lost both of my parents and most recently my brother in October. Along with the heartbreak, came some financial burdens that have caused some added worries and stress. I would use some of this to create a special memory for my little family of four, because we could all use a little sunshine during the rainstorms.
