Katie Whitestone

I love watching the scholars learn new things about the world around them. My students get very little exposure outside of the classroom.

Tell us why you became a teacher

After I retired from the Navy, I wanted a job with a schedule that matched my young kids and my husband. We love to travel and love the breaks that teachers get. However, once I entered the classroom, it just felt like it where I always belonged.

Tell us about your most memorable teaching experience

We took the whole 3rd grade class to see the Nutcracker Ballet. We encouraged them to dress up and they did. They were so impressed by the theater and the orchestra. They were memorized by the music and dancing. One little boy was so excited he just talked about everything happening on stage to the chaperone sitting beside him. Our kids never get that experience and they loved it.

What would you do with the $25,000?

Pay for my husband and I to go on a cruise to Antarctica. We have rooms booked now and have paid a bit, but this would cover the rest of this once in a lifetime opportunity. It is an educational, nature focus trip that we can't wait for.
