Tell us why you became a teacher

I’ve wanted to be a teacher for as long as I can remember. My Kindergarten teacher was a beautiful soul. She was such a kind and caring person. She encouraged my love of learning. I will be forever grateful to her for instilling that in me and for making me want to give back and teach.

Tell us about your most memorable teaching experience

Being a teacher at a low income school has many challenges. Some of my kids come to school every day hungry, in the same clothes all week, and with extremely inattentive parents. Narrowing this down to one memorable experience is difficult. The times I remember most are when these students thrive and learn in my class. They love coming to school and want more. My favorite part is when they come in not even knowing their letters and end up fluently reading by the end of the year.

What would you do with the $25,000?

Honestly….I would first treat myself (and bring my daughter) to a relaxing spa weekend. Teaching is hard. It is hard on your mind, your being, and especially your heart. After 29 years of teaching a break once in a while is needed! Next, I think I’d give my current kiddos a super fun party. And after that…save the rest for retirement.
