Tell us why you became a teacher

I began my teaching journey at the Evergreen Center in 1992. I was working with students with significant disabling conditions. I distinctly remember one child who had no functional vision and how he ignited my desire to learn how to engage him directly in the learning process. I began taking university courses soon after and realized that learning about proper teaching methods and techniques was going to be an ongoing adventure. It was a journey that has led me into my classroom and dream job!

Tell us about your most memorable teaching experience

My most memorable teaching experience was when I worked as a Teacher of Visually Impaired (TVI) in New York. I had a young child who was Deafblind. We had been introducing tangible symbols. One day, she came into my therapy room but I was still setting up the session. I had left multiple items on the table when she came over and scanned the items. She picked up one of the items, turned around, and then began heading out the door. She chose the tennis ball cue used for gym and heading that way!

What would you do with the $25,000?

I would use the $25,000 to create a dedicated outdoor play area specifically designed for our preschool students. Our current playground was built for older children, so it does not fully meet the developmental needs of our youngest learners. We want to redesign the space to be engaging, safe, and developmentally appropriate, giving our preschoolers an environment that supports active play, exploration, and growth.
