Tell us why you became a teacher

I originally became a teacher because I wanted to share knowledge and skills with young minds. Little did I know that teaching is so much more than that. I started to notice the kids who didn't try or sat apart from the others; they peaked my interest and I wondered how I could help them shine bright. I understand that each student is a result of a system of influences. Now, I teach to make a difference in each individual student's life, and the learning happens on both sides!

Tell us about your most memorable teaching experience

As part of being a Family and Consumer Sciences Teacher, I also advise my school chapter of Family, Career, and Community Leaders of America. Through this co-curricular student organization, I took 17 students to a state competition and leadership conference. Only the top 2 places in each event get to walk onto the stage; every single one of my students walked and advanced to national competition. They demonstrated professionalism at its finest, and it was an amazing experience for us all!

What would you do with the $25,000?

Honestly, I would likely pour a majority of it back into my classroom and Patriot FCCLA chapter. I want to support the students who need it most. They don't always have someone in their corner, and I will continue to happily make sure their needs are met as much as possible. When students have a proper support system, they thrive and pass it on to those who come behind them. I'd like to pay it forward for them.
