Tell us why you became a teacher

I became a teacher because of the incredible teachers who supported me during a difficult time in my life. School was my safe place, where I felt seen, valued, and loved. I would arrive early and stay late just to be there. They showed me that teaching is more than lessons — it’s mentorship, compassion, and presence. Their impact inspired me to become that steady support for my own students and create a classroom where every child feels safe and important.

Tell us about your most memorable teaching experience

One of my most memorable teaching experiences comes from my high school drumline. During a band trip, we were all on the bus when the seniors led the group through our full cadence sequence, ending with taps. Afterward, they shared the traditions that had been passed down year after year. Watching them honor the past while welcoming the next group forward was incredibly moving. It reminded me how powerful mentorship, legacy, and shared purpose can be in shaping students.

What would you do with the $25,000?

If awarded $25,000, I would create stability for my family by moving out of my trailer, providing a safer home for my two-year-old and our pets. I would invest in continuing my master’s degree to grow as an educator and purchase much-needed equipment for my drumline, giving my students the tools to succeed and take pride in their program.
