It’s a calling. I was lucky enough to have several loving, dedicated teachers growing up. I saw and felt how powerful their care and influence was. I wanted to help and inspire kids just like them. I believe I’ve had several future teachers in my classes over the years. Being a part of that legacy is important.

Hard to pick just one… But it’s probably hatching chicks in the classroom. I’ve done this many years. We watch the incubator for 21 days and there are fun projects along the way. The best memory is a first grade class spontaneously whisper singing “Happy Birthday “ as the first chick hatched. This was led by a difficult behavior student. Every year I have graduating seniors come back to visit me and the chickens are always the core memory. Somehow I became the chicken lady. Haha

Teaching isn’t a well paid career. I have some debt from the months I have to float extra expenses. Also, If the trip to Hawaii doesn’t include my 3 kids, I’d use it to take them with me.
