I am a previous wildlife rehabilitator, and I love connecting content and learning to real-world environmental connections through hands-on.
Thank you for supporting Karis Lowrie in this year's competition. Your donations and participation will benefit The Planetary Society in their mission to advance space exploration, inspire discovery, and empower the next generation of innovators.
I became a teacher because I enjoy sharing my love of science and ecology with others. I love encouraging and promoting student interest and learning related to the natural world.
Tell us about your most memorable teaching experienceI have a few students who enjoy helping to care for our class pet button quail. In our unit of genetics and embryology, our class incubated and hatched baby button quail. Our class then made a pedigree for the babies and discussed some of the genetics related to button quail coloration. The students acted as zookeepers when discussing future breeding with the button quail; egg fertility, bird relatedness, epistasis, and bringing in new genetics to our aviary were discussed.
What would you do with the $25,000?I would use the money for hands-on labs in the classroom. Our students do not have access to many resources, so finding meaningful and engaging connections is crucial for student success and comprehension.
