I became a teacher because I once felt invisible. I immigrated from the Dominican Republic at nine, and none of my teachers looked like me or understood my story. I was told, “This is America—speak English or don’t speak at all,” so I chose silence until I learned the language. I teach so no child in my classroom feels unheard, unseen, or ashamed of who they are.

Tell us about your most memorable teaching experience

My most memorable teaching experience was watching a student who barely spoke all year finally raise her hand and share her story with confidence. She reminded me of myself at nine—quiet and unsure. When the class applauded her, she smiled in a way I’ll never forget. In that moment, I knew my classroom was more than a place to learn—it was a place to belong.

What would you do with the $25,000?

I would use the $25,000 to transform learning for bilingual students. I’d invest in hands-on resources, tech tools, and culturally relevant materials that make learning come alive. Beyond the classroom, I’d use part of it to build my own tutoring business—a safe space where students are seen, heard, and empowered to succeed, no matter their language or background. It’s an investment in opportunity and confidence, not just curriculum.
