Tell us why you became a teacher

I love creating memorable classroom experiences that will help students feel excited about coming to school and to consider various options and opportunities beyond the typical classroom activities. My ELA classes read mystery books with a fun Game of Clue at the end. My STEAM class works with special education students to make and sell Jello. I encourage and work alongside my students volunteering at local events and support them at their extra curricular activities. Teaching is the best job.

Tell us about your most memorable teaching experience

I was able to get grants for my 6th and 8th grade STEAM students to build 60 prosthetic hands through the “Hands of Gratitude” program. The 3 day build process is made even more rewarding since the students see a picture and read the story of the exact person who will receive the hand. The students then decorate the bag the hand will be stored in and write personal notes to them. Many students shared that this was one of their all time favorite activities because it was a real world experience.

What would you do with the $25,000?

I would use the money to support the many volunteer opportunities, experiences, supplies and activities that I try to provide for my students. I would love to use the money to invite a cool author to come and speak to our middle school students. Just last month my father passed away and it has made it abundantly clear that time is precious and spending time with family and friends is very important. I would use the money for fun together and towards my daughter's college tuition.
